Best Tapas Bars in Barcelona

Every Day Living, Personal Restaurant Guide No Comments

Despite tapas being more usually associated with southern Spain, Barcelona does have an excellent variety of tapas bars. Here is a brief selection of some of the best:

Bar Celta (c/Merce 16, Metro: Drassanes)
This no-frills tapas bar specialises in Galician cuisine. Popular choices include octopus, razor clams, calamari and other regional seafood.

Cerveceria Catalana (c/de Mallorca, Metro: Passeig de Gracia)
A popular bar in the Eixample district which is almost always busy. There’s a large choice of tapas available, and the bottles of beer lining the walls help to give the place its special character.

Euskal Etxea (Pl. de Montcada 1-3, Metro: Jaume I)
Popular with both tourists and residents, this Basque tapas bar is renowned for its tasty portions of tempura chicken, crab and tuna. There is also an adjoining restaurant offering more Basque cuisine.

Els Quatro Gats (c/Montsio 3, Metro: Catalunya)
This tapas bar used to be a gathering place for the city’s Modernista artists, and it also hosted Pablo Picasso’s first ever public exhibition in 1901. The food may not be particularly remarkable, but the setting certainly is.

El Vaso de Oro (c/Balboa 6, Metro: Barceloneta)
An extremely popular tapas bar which brews its own beer. There is a huge choice of tapas available, including fried sausage, spicy tuna, cubed steak and squid.

Fish And Chips in Barcelona

This month sees the 1 year anniversary of Barcelona´s only authentic Fish and Chips shop. Run by two gorgeous lasses Julie and Julia, it boasts a mouth watering menu of cod and chips, chicken and mushroom pie and chips, steak and kidney pie and chips, mushy peas… all of the creature comforts that you might be used to if you are from the UK. If you are not, once you have tried this typically British delicacy, you will be hooked for life.

Situated on Rambla Raval, which is fast becoming one of the most trendy areas of Barcelona, they have space for 20 people seated and quaint terrace slap bang on the Rambla Raval concourse. What is interesting to note is that a lot of the regulars to the local chippy are Spanish and Catalan, is it the food, the ambiance or the lovely lasses behind the counter… I have eaten there many times and I can tell you its all three.

If you happen to get a copy of May´s Easyjet magazine, there was a 4 page write up on them!!!

Check them out at Rambla Raval 26
