Barcelona Demonstration Against Fur

6:46 pm Every Day Living

After the last post from Ons regarding this subject, I decided to go and witness this spectacle for myself. So on Sunday armed with my camera and camcorder I took a trip down to the cathedral of Barcelona.

It was a nippy morning but the sun was shining and the sky was light shade of blue. On arrival it seemed that nothing was really going on. I called my friend who had mentioned that she would be there also and she told me to come to the meeting point at the side of the cathedral.

There was a sizeable crowd of people milling around in their bathrobes and towels. Here, I was told was the rallying point for the protestors. Actually they were just ordinary people like you and I who just decided one Sunday morning to stand up for what they believe in.

Anyway after about 20 minutes the leader of the demonstration (pictured below) led the congregation to the front of the cathedral steps. Each person held a small bottle of red dye and when the signal was given, they all stripped naked and poured it over their naked bodies and lay on the cold stone steps in perfect silence with their eyes closed. There was a growing crowd of observers wondering what the hell was going on as word spread around the plaza. But it was peaceful, well organised and somewhat admirable.

Did they get the attention of the public… well you are reading this aren’t you? There was something extremely emmotive about watching this group of people, cuddling up to each other on this cold Sunday morning. People from all walks of life, mothers, fathers, friends, colleagues and strangers all gathering together to protest against what they believe is inhumane behaviour against innocent animals.

I also made a little video of the whole thing here. If it can save one mink or a chinchilla… then its been worth it. For those visitors who happened to be passing by, they really must have got an unexpected eyeful. One senior citizen shouted out ´wow look at all that meat´ he was swiftly rebuked by a fellow onlooker who told him respectfully to shut up and listen.

Anyway you decide and make up your mind upon which side you fall with regards to this debate…as for me well I might get my kit off…next year!!!!
