Thai Gardens… What a Delight

Hello well here is my first review of our ´Personal Restaurant Guide´ Yesterday I ate at the Thai Gardens Restaurant. Firstly I thought the ambiance was delightful, serene and calm with real plants growing in the restaurant area, how they keep them so green and healthy looking I don’t know, but I did make a mental note to find out.

The staff were warm and very friendly, the women were dressed in authentic Thai wear and the men were smartly ´duked out´ in dark suits and white shirts. I know it probably sounds a bit stuffy, but it was very fitting and helped set the ambiance. I also noticed an ornate free flowing rock fountain complete with real fish swimming around to their heart’s content… couldn’t wait to get to the food.

We began with a Kir Royal to whet the appetites and get the digestive juices flowing; I went for the Massaman Thai Curry with boiled rice (well boiled rice sounds healthy, so I don’t feel too bad about loading up on carbs at nighttime!!!). The curry sauce (which was beef) came amply seasoned with red peppers, cashew nuts and a symphony of other spices that I couldn’t tell you.

The most amazing pleasures were however, the tender chunks of beef which proved to be a winner amongst my fellow diners, coupled with the lightly boiled Thai rice, I can definitely recommend this dish as a main.

The starter was a Chicken Satay which was tasty but average.

The dessert was… well I did not have dessert but If I did I would have had the ´ sweet banana rice wrapped in banana vine leaves´ I was told it was very nice… ok yes I did have it and it was exquisite. I forgot the name in Thai but I’ll get it for you next time I pop by.

I give this one a thumbs up put this on your list on thing to do in Barcelona!!!

Ciudad Condal- the best Tapas in town!!!

Last night my friend flew into town, he is a pilot so he pops in once a month or so for a night en route to somewhere else. We met at the corner of Rambla Catalunya with Gran Via. Faced with the choice of dining al fresco or inside, we chose the former, did you get the subtle hint…? Dinning al fresco in the middle of winter in Barcelona - what a treat. Anyway it was a touch nippy but there again I am susceptible to the faintest of breezes. To my friend from UK this was warm weather.

The service in Ciudad is excellent. The waiters are very friendly, multilingual and extremely attentive. I was told a while ago the Ciudad make the best tapas in Barcelona, it is hard to disagree really. I started off with an ensalada de atun (tuna salad) complete with red peppers, onions and hard boiled egg. Well that was to satisfy my healthy stomach, now for my other stomach, I launched in to a plate of patatas bravas (like cubes of fried potato) with hot sauce, a tapas of solomio (mini steak tapas) two skewers of grilled shrimp and ‘ una tapa de cangrejo’ (crab).

The beautiful thing about tapas is that everything comes in small bit sized pieces so you can explore a rainbow of different tastes and dishes without actually stuffing yourself. In fact the locals used to and still do pop in to several bars in an afternoon sampling small mouthfuls of tapas and soaking up the atmosphere in each one as they go along. Its great fun!!!

I didn’t opt for dessert, but my friend went for the mixed fruit salad. The real treat about Ciudad Condal however is that you are sat on one of the most fashionable streets in the city and you can watch the whole world go by. It is not filled with tourists or shoppers like Las Ramblas or Passeig De Gracia, it is filled with amblers, people just chilling going for a walk and generally enjoying Barcelona.

This gets a big vote from me, put this on your list of things to do in Barcelona

Ugarit Restaurant a taste of Syrian cooking in Barcelona

Last night I went to a great Restaurant in the Barcelona’s Villa Olimpca area. There were three of us and I was very pleased wit hour choice of restaurant. We found quite by accident as we intended going to the Icaria Cinema (which is one of the only cinemas in Barcelopna that show english movies in the original undubbed version.)

On arriving, we were in between movie start times and had about an hour and a half to kill, so we decided to check out Ugarit, which is located within the complex. The first thing I must tell you about is the warm welcome we recieved from the waiters, I think our waiter was called Mootlu. As we were not too familiar with Lebanese food, we asked for some suggestions. We ended up getting Salatat Malfuf and the Salatat Geben which were salad dishes consisting of finely chopped onions, tomatoes, cucumber and goats cheese. For the main dish we ordered a ‘ super ugarit carne‘ which is a dish of assorted meats - chicken, lamb, beef, all cooked in full view on a skewer. We also order its vegetarian equivalent ‘ the super ugarit vegetal’ a dish consisting of delicately spiced stews and dips such as hummus, rice wrapped in vine leaves, and a few others that I am afraid you have to try yourselves to appreciate the flavours. All the main dishes came complete with pita type bread pre-cut into easiy manageable triangles.

The dessert was deliciously decadent pistacio milk cake. Know as the postre de la casa (the dessert of the house).

The experience was great the food was delicious and the service was top notch. Another strong reccomndedation from me!!! oh and the bill for three people 63euros… the film that we went to see was sadly not as good as the food we ate.
