Paris, Florence, and Prague – each of these cities are known for being romantic hotspots in their own right, but one city that you may not have thought about visiting for your very own love story is Barcelona. The city has tonnes to offer for budding couples and seasoned partners alike, you just need to know where to look. Intimate parks for summertime picnics, solitary beachs for wintertime strolls, stunning viewpoints for springtime hugs, and cosy dining for autumn intimacy – whatever the season is, you can always find special moments to share with your significant other in Barcelona.

Romance in Parc Laberint d’Horta

When people who tell you about their experience of Barcelona say that it’s a crowded city, well they obviously haven’t been to the northern parts ( despite there being so much to do)! One of the most peaceful – and yet at the same time beautiful – places to visit in the Catalan capital is Parc Laberint d’Horta. These stunning gardens are amongst the oldest in the city and were designed for a bourgeois family throughout the 1700s and 1800s. They primarily feature neo-classical sculptures based around Greek mythology and of course a labyrinth, but there are also smaller gardens designed in varying styles from oriental to romantic, and even a forest.

Say ‘adeiu’ to the suffocating hordes of the city centre and ‘hola’ to the tranquil and spacious allure of these luscious green gardens. With over 9 hectares of space and a limit of 750 guests at any given time, you are essentially assured that you will be able to find your very own secret spot, whether it’s for a picnic, a deep conversation, or a loving kiss. It’s free on Wednesdays and Sundays therefore more are likely to visit on these days, so come any other day because it’s really only a couple of euros!

If that’s still not quite private enough, then visit the Jardines de la Tamarita that are only a stone’s throw away from the Avinguda Tibidabo station (L6/L7), it is known even less amongst visitors!

A beachtime stroll at sunset

During the summer, the chance of romance on the beaches of Barcelona is very slim, but as the sea temperature drops and the appeal to tourists diminishes, it turns into the perfect secluded spot to bring your companion. To make sure the romance stays heated, be sure to wrap up warm. You can walk the entire coastline of Barcelona in one hour, conveniently more or less the time it takes for the sun to set around the mountains behind the city, so a sunset walk – watching the glisten of the Mediterranean fade as the capital goes from day to night – is the perfect end to any amorous adventure out…

… But for the most adventurous couples, take the stroll at around 07:30 in the winter months to capture that special moment as the sun humbly peeks over the sea, casting the first few warm rays of light over the city… Spectacular.

A day out on the Tibidabo mountain

Views from Tibidabo
Just some of the views from Tibidabo

Look north from pretty much anywhere in Barcelona and you will see the green mountains of Tibidabo as they silently watch over the city. There are many viewpoints to be found in Barcelona, but none of them even come close to the hair-raising views of Tibidabo. You can easily make a wonderful day out of this activity, first discovering the park with your partner by hopping on the Ferris wheel together and indulging in some candy-floss. Next go inside the elegant Sagrat Cor church and use the lift for a taste of the vistas, all before hopping on the 111 bus and visiting Torre Collserola. The observation deck here will give you the most amazing views as the sun sets over Catalonia. It’s open every single weekend throughout the year.

Afterwards, you could hop right back on the bus and take the train to return to the city centre, but if you’re not done romancing your partner, then you can take a walk to the Fabra Observatory at night for a tour that will let you look through the powerful telescope and see the stars and planets together like never before. From June – October you can even reserve a dreamlike dinner here – right under the stars – with live music and food fit for a connoisseur. Places are limited and selling out, so why not plan it now?

Three very different options for a calm and idyllic time in this fair city. So, if you want to spend a great Valentine’s day in the perfect place or you simply want to treat that certain someone any time of the year, forget the cliché destinations and discover a truly poetic and enchanting time right here in Barcelona.
