how to get lost in Barcelona

We want to show you the hippest area of Barcelona, el Born. El Born is one of the area´s in ´Ciutat Vella´, the old town of Barcelona. It has become one of the most wanted areas to live in Barcelona. El Born is served by the metro stations Barceloneta and Jaume 1, the yellow line. The very city centre and the beach are both only 10 minutes away. The ´la Ribera´ area of el Born, is the original artisans home of Barcelona, you will see that all the street names are derived from acient craftmanships.

When you walk in the area of e; Nprm you are surrounded by restaurants, designer boutiques, trendy terraces and hidden squares. El Born is the Soho of Barcelona. The boutiques can be quite expensive, but they are great to find that one-off piece. The dark alleys, which are now to be found charming, were up in the 80s of the last century a bit dingy. That image changed completely when the Olympics came. Tourists and entrepreneurs saw potential in the flourishing area. In no-time el Born turned out to be the trendiest area of Barcelona. If you are in a lazy mood, just take a walk or lay down in the urban Parc de la Ciutadella or visit one of the museums, like the Picasso museum. We wrote down a few of our favorite spots in el Born.

SIGHTS

Basilica Santa Maria Del Mar

The first mention of the Santa Maria del Mar was in 998, yet as you can see when you visit the basilica, the cornerstone was laid in 1329. The style is a perfect example of 14th century Catalan Gothic and the temple is seen as an icon for Catalan Gothic. It´s situated in the middle of the little, cozy streets of El Born, la Ribera area. Especially the inside is really impressive, imagine it took about 5000 persons to build this temple.

Arc de Triomf

The triumphal arch was built for the occasion of the Universal Exhibition of 1888, which took place at the Parc de la Ciutadella. The Arc de Triomf, which is located at the end of a wide promenade – Passeig Lluis Companys, acted as a gateway to the exhibition.

Palau de Justícia

This monumental building is situated left of the Arc de Triomf. You can catch a glimpse of the entrance hall, but the building is not accessible to the ordinary citizen or tourist.

Parc de la Ciutadella

This is the biggest park of Barcelona and is very popular among the citizens. It was built in 1888 and houses a monumental waterfall, a pond and a romantic English-style garden. It´s our favorite park to spend some hours after work to relax. In weekends it can be quite busy, but during the week it´s the perfect spot to chill out with some friends. The zoo is also located in Parc de la Ciutadella which is worth a visit, especially with the whole family. There are almost 7.500 animals which represent 400 different species.

Palau de la Música

This is one of the finest concert halls in the world. It was designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner, a contemporary of Gaudí and one of the architects of the Catalan Modernism. The hall has beautiful decorations and ornaments and a very special skylight, which is an attraction itself. Due to the fact that it´s the only concert venue in the Catalan Art Nouveau style it got added to the World Heritage Site. Click here for the website.
