Horta-Guinardó is located in the north west of Barcelona, is a big and residential district which is relatively unknown by tourists. By means of this blog, I want to change this, because there are many wonderful places which are off the beaten track in this huge district, especially attractive spots for peace and quiet in the open air. A beautiful valley is located in the middle of the area, so you have access to great points of natural attractions between the hills and the mountains.
There are 2 very special parks located in Horta-Guinardo, the biggest metropolitan park in the world and the oldest park of Barcelona are located in this district. The biggest metropolitan park in the world is Parc de Collserola (metrostop Mundet). When you climb up the hills of this huge park, you will enjoy some spectacular views. You can totally immerse yourself in the beautiful nature, history and culture. There are several activities provided in this park, such as walking tours, bird watching, Catalan bat nights and wine tastings. For more information about Parc de Collserola, click here.
Parc de la Labyrinth (metrostation Mundet) is a totally different park to Parc de Collserola but just as impressive in its own way. The highlight of this park is of course the intriguing maze of bushes in the centre. Parc de la Labyrinth is the oldest and most established park of Barcelona and it is very diverse, there is something for everybody. In case you want some romance, you can stroll over the paths and go to the romantic gardens. If you are with your family, you can let the children play in the playgrounds and in the Labyrinth or you can go for a picnic. For the art lovers, there is some beautiful architecture and there is a museum, in case you just want some recreation you can enjoy the scenic views, the footpaths and a picnic. Make sure you call in to see Velodrom d´Horta, which was used to host the track cycling events of the 1992 Olympic Games. It is just in opposite to the entrance of the park. Another park is Parc Del Guinardó (metrostop Guinardo Hospital de Sant Pau), this is the perfect place to relax with lots of local charm around you. The main part of the park is a mixture of wooded walking paths and wonderful little waterfalls. Parc Del Guinardó is a heaven for kids, as there is a playground every 10 meters in the beginning of the park. In case you walk to the highest point of the park, you can enjoy wonderful views of the city of Barcelona.
The Hospital de la Sant Pau (metrostop Guinardo Hospital de Sant Pau) is definitely the masterpiece of Horta-Guinardo, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was a fully functioning hospital till 2009, when much needed renovation had to take place. You have free access to the grounds and there are guided tours several times a morning in different languages.
For going our out, I recommend the restaurant La Cuicina d´en Jordi and the bar Torre Rosa. La Cuicina d´en Jordi is a cozy restaurant with a traditional atmosphere and delicious Mediterranean dishes which you can eat in the lovely terrace garden. I heard their cod with honey is one of their most popular dishes. Torre Rosa is a cocktail bar in a memorable old Indian house with a garden terrace where you can have the most delicious cocktails, because the bartender is the recipient of numerous cocktail awards.
Torre Rosa is a must for real cocktail lovers.

I recommend you to visit this district in the morning or in the afternoon, to enjoy the small town feeling and the wonderful nature, because in the evening, there is nothing to do. In case you are on a budget you might want to consider searching an accommodation in Horta-Guinardo. The accommodations will be cheaper in here and with the metro you are never far away from the city centre of Barcelona.
Horta-Guinardo is the perfect district for recreation because of its many beautiful parks. There are many attractive spots for peace and quiet in the open air between the hills and the mountains of Barcelona.
